It’s Sunday… and the weather is a 10! Looking for a nice little drive? Here are six Sunday drives, each a little different but all within a few hours of home. From backroads and small Southern towns to the affluent city neighborhoods of old Atlanta, these drives are full of history, lovely scenery, and interesting sites to explore if you choose. Enjoy—after all, the drive is the destination!

GA Highway 85 south toward Woodbury

Senoia may be the fictionalized Woodbury in The Walking Dead, but the real Woodbury lies 24 miles to Senoia’s south. Leave Senoia on Georgia Highway 85 south toward Woodbury for a pleasant country drive characterized by white fenced farmland, horse and cow pastures, white clapboard churches, old barns, small towns, and railroad track constructed to link the towns to Atlanta.

The first town you will come to is Haralson, a frequent filming location for The Walking Dead. Stop by Williams Grocery for a sausage biscuit. A few miles down the road is Alvaton, where a roadside stand sells seasonal fruit and produce. Next is Gay, best known as the site of the bi-annual Cotton Pickin’ Fair.

In Gay, take a short detour to the oldest covered bridge in Georgia. Turn left onto Gay Concord Road. At the fork, bear left onto Flat Shoals Road. Go to Covered Bridge Road and turn right. Follow it to the Red Oak Creek Covered Bridge. Freed slave and master bridge builder Horace King built it in the 1840s, using the sturdy Town lattice design. It is his only surviving bridge of this design. Drive through and continue until the road dead ends back into Highway 85. Turn left and continue to Woodbury.

The oldest town in Meriwether County, Woodbury began in 1828 around a crossroads just west of the Flint River. Once the railroad laid track, the town flourished as a cotton market. Warehouses, businesses, and homes sprang up. Today, those warehouses are filled with antique stores like Antiques on Main Street and High Cotton Antique Mall, which alone has 30,000 square feet and 52 dealers.
